East German party car up for grabs

Here’s a great opportunity for anyone that has an extra parking spot and is interested in owning their own curious piece of East German history.

The German fan fest pavilion is auctioning off an one-of-a-kind specially imported Trabant – a compact car that was a staple mode of transportation for Germans on the Soviet-side of the Berlin wall between the late 1950s and late 1980s.

This particular Trabant, which is to be auctioned off following the men’s gold medal hockey game, comes with two notable amenities: a beer tap on the back trunk and small bar in the interior.

Burnaby businesses building bridge to Sochi 2014

Burnaby businesses took initial steps this week to capitalize on the next Winter Olympic opportunity.

About 80 representatives from 40 Burnaby businesses networked with representatives from the 2014 Sochi Olympic organizing committee and the Russian Olympic Committee on Tuesday.

The event was co-organized by the Burnaby Board of Trade and the Canada-Karelia Society aimed at giving local business people direct access to the Russian delegation at the Vancouver Games.

Federal government admits 2010 Olympic opportunity not fully tapped

With the world’s eyes on Vancouver, Canada’s international trade minister admits that more could have been done to promote Canada’s trade and investment advantages to the world during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

“I think all of us underestimated the opportunity that the Olympics presented,” said Peter Van Loan, the federal minister of international trade. “How positive the mood would be here; how much people would enjoy being here. I think, if anything, we wish we would have made bigger promotional efforts here.”

Whistler Blackcomb using media to promote resort

While Intrawest ULC sorts through its financial woes, its prized Whistler Blackcomb Resort is using the media during the Games as its number one advertising tool.

The Whistler Blackcomb Media Hub in the village’s Westin Hotel is a one-stop shop for journalists looking to tell stories about the mountain.

Intrawest, which owns the resort, has set up the hub so that members of the media can walk in, strap on skis and head up the mountain.

“We knew we would have hundreds if not thousands of journalists coming through town,” said resort spokesperson Christina Moore. “We wanted to find a way to ensure that they had access to the mountain … as well as give us an opportunity to proactively pitch our stories to them.”

Rocky Mountaineer to remain Alberta’s train for 2010 season

What was considered one of the most unique marketing opportunities during the Olympic Games is getting an extended lease on life.

Rocky Mountaineer Vacations plans to keep the Alberta promotional wraps on its dome cars for its 2010 operating season.

“It’s a neat way for Alberta to continue to celebrate the legacy of the Olympics,” said Rocky Mountaineer’s spokesperson Ian Robertson.

Global conference during Olympics used to promote Canada

More than 130 business leaders from around the world attended a day-long conference that the federal government used to highlight Canada’s competitive edge in the global economy.

Peter Van Loan, Canada’s minister of international trade hosted the event that included a keynote from Mohamed El-Erain, CEO and co-CIO of PIMCO, a global asset management firm with a $1 trillion in assets under management.

Other panelists at the event included Dame Clara Furse, DBE, former CEO of the London Stock Exchange, Paul Jenkins, senior deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, Thomas Kloet, CEO of TMX Group, Malcolm Knight, vice-chair of Deutche Bank Global Group and Paul Fletcher, Vancouver managing partner of Deloitte.
